Schools in Greenwich and Lewisham have been recognised by Transport for London for their efforts to encourage pupils to travel more sustainably while improving road safety and air quality around their communities.
St Alfege with St Peter’s CofE Primary School in Greenwich and Drumbeat School in Lewisham were among just 18 schools across the capital honoured through TfL’s Travel for Life programme, which promotes walking, cycling, scooting and safer journeys to school.
Drumbeat School, which operates across three sites in Lewisham, was praised for its rapid success after joining the programme. Staff and pupils embraced a range of active travel and road safety initiatives, helping the school achieve Gold accreditation in a relatively short period of time.
TfL highlighted the school’s commitment to promoting safer, more sustainable journeys, despite the challenges of operating across multiple locations.
Meanwhile, St Alfege, with St Peter’s CofE Primary School, was recognised for reinvigorating its involvement in the Travel for Life programme and for working towards regaining Gold accreditation.
With support from Greenwich Council officers, the school has been rebuilding its travel plan activities and encouraging pupils and families to choose more sustainable ways of travelling to and from school.
The recognition comes as TfL celebrates schools across London that are helping reduce car use on the school run, improve road safety and encourage healthier lifestyles among young people.
More than 1,500 schools across the capital now take part in the Travel for Life programme, which supports schools in promoting walking, cycling, scooting and public transport use.
London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, said the awards recognise schools that are helping create safer streets and healthier communities while inspiring the next generation to make more sustainable travel choices.
The achievements of both schools highlight the growing commitment across Greenwich and Lewisham to improving air quality, reducing congestion and creating safer journeys for children and families.
