Popular media room figure and former journalist passes away aged 87 after decades of dedicated service to the club

Charlton Athletic and the wider football media community are mourning the loss of Peter ‘Scoop’ Burrowes, a much-loved and long-serving member of the club’s press and media team, who has passed away aged 87 following a short battle with cancer.

Peter’s association with Charlton stretched back more than four decades. He first covered the Addicks as a reporter for the Kentish Independent before joining the club as Press Officer during the 1980s under manager Lennie Lawrence, helping to promote the club during its rise to the old First Division.

Over the years, Peter became a familiar and respected figure around The Valley. Supporters will remember him as the voice of Charlton on the Clubcall telephone service during the 1990s, while generations of fans also enjoyed his regular contributions to the Valley Review matchday programme.

Although he officially retired around 25 years ago, Peter’s commitment to Charlton never wavered. He continued to volunteer at the club, organising the Press and Media Room on matchdays and serving as the first point of contact for journalists and broadcasters attending games.

Whether distributing press passes, handing out team sheets or sharing the latest club news with a smile, Peter was a constant and welcoming presence whose knowledge, warmth and enthusiasm made him a favourite among players, staff and members of the media alike.

Affectionately known as ‘Scoop’ because of his journalism background, Peter became an institution at The Valley. His enduring presence in the Media Room and Press Gantry will be greatly missed by everyone connected with Charlton Athletic.

Our thoughts are with Peter’s family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
