The Royal Borough of Greenwich are facing a backlash, as their funding cuts continue, with a proposal to review funding of a much-loved animal park.
The Animal Care Centre on Thorntree Road in Charlton, situated near to Maryon Park is hugely popular with both locals and visitors to the area.
Now cash-strapped Royal Borough of Greenwich are proposing to cut the costs of the animal centre in their budget cuts.
A petition has been organised to try and convince the council not to make the cuts, citing the benefits it has to the community in supporting mental health and wellbeing, social cohesion, kindness and understanding. The park has educational benefits and is frequently used by schools and pre-school families.
The animal park also includes woodlands, grasslands, and streams and is home to domestic animals like sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, geese, horses and ducks
The park offers free public tours where visitors can feed, stroke, and handle the animals
For the last 50 years the Charlton Park Riding for Disabled ponies have been stabled there, supporting children with disabilities and their families.
A petition to try and stop the council cutting funding is gathering pace online.
