A mental health initiative developed by the London Borough of Bexley and delivered by Mind in Bexley has been named Innovation Champion at the Kent Mental Wellbeing Awards.
The Bexley Barbershop Project was created to support men who may be struggling with their mental health by working with local barbers. In this setting, research shows men are statistically more likely to open up than in a GP’s surgery. The award recognises the project’s creative, community-based approach to improving wellbeing.
Cllr Melvin Seymour, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services and Health, welcomed the recognition:
“This is a well-deserved award. I have been part of this project since its launch in 2022. We know that men often struggle to talk about mental health issues and the fact that the project has developed to allow even more people to benefit is great news. I’d encourage other local settings to get involved.”
The initiative has since grown into the Wellbeing Ambassadors scheme, widening its reach beyond barbershops. Now, stylists, nail technicians, tattoo artists and barbers are trained to recognise signs of poor mental health and offer support. So far, 61 Ambassadors have completed the training.
The impact has been significant: more than 1,800 wellbeing conversations have taken place, and 43 people have been referred on to Mind in Bexley’s Crisis services. Using tools such as conversation-prompt mirror stickers, Ambassadors are helping reduce stigma, encourage open discussion and guide people towards professional help when needed.
Local barbershops, salons, tattoo studios and nail bars in Bexley are invited to join the growing network of Wellbeing Ambassadors. To get involved, contact Mind in Bexley at ambassador@mindinbexley.org.uk.
