Royal Observatory Greenwich to close for major renovation until 2028

The Royal Observatory Greenwich will temporarily close later this year for a major renovation programme.

All buildings at the historic Greenwich site will close to visitors from 2 November 2026, with the Observatory expected to fully reopen in 2028.

The closure is part of Royal Museums Greenwich’s major First Light transformation project, which will improve the Observatory and the visitor experience.

However, people visiting Greenwich will still be able to experience some of the Observatory’s astronomy programme while the work takes place.

Astronomy moves to the National Maritime Museum

A temporary planetarium and a new Astronomers Take Over gallery will be available at the nearby National Maritime Museum during the closure.

The hands-on space will give visitors the opportunity to meet astronomers from the Royal Observatory, take part in science demonstrations and ask questions about astronomy and space.

Families will also be able to see Unboxing the Universe, a multi-sensory live science show featuring demonstrations by Royal Observatory astronomers and audience participation.

An Astronomy LEGO® Brick Club will also explore the history and science of astronomy through LEGO® and DUPLO® activities, with sessions based around themes including space, time and navigation.

Other Royal Museums Greenwich attractions, including the National Maritime Museum, Queen’s House and Cutty Sark, will remain available to visitors.

Prime Meridian could reopen in summer 2027

Although the Observatory itself will remain closed, plans include temporarily reopening one of its most famous attractions before the wider project is completed.

Royal Museums Greenwich says it is looking to reopen the Meridian Courtyard during summer 2027, allowing visitors to once again stand on and take photographs at the historic Prime Meridian line.

Further details about access to the courtyard are expected closer to the time.

The Royal Observatory is due to fully reopen in 2028 after the renovation work is complete.

Royal Museums Greenwich is also inviting people to support the First Light project through donations.
