Rutherford returns to the Lionesses after a career that has seen her represent clubs across the Women's Super League and Women's Championship, including Bristol City, Leicester City, Crystal Palace, Charlton Athletic, Ipswich Town and Portsmouth. Aswell as experience across various England Youth levels.
The move represents a homecoming for the 26-year-old, who first made her name after progressing through the Millwall Centre of Excellence before breaking into the senior side as a teenager.
Her return will also see her reunited with some familiar faces. Rutherford came through the Millwall academy alongside current club captain Jordan Butler and fellow attacking player Ciara Watling, with the trio remaining close friends after beginning their football journeys together in South East London.
Having gained valuable experience at the highest levels of the women's game, Rutherford returns to a Lionesses side looking to build on last season and push forward in the campaign ahead. A creative attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, Rutherford is capable of unlocking defences with her vision, technical ability and intelligent movement, adding further quality and experience to the Millwall midfield.
Speaking to official club media following her return, Rutherford said “Being back in a Millwall kit is so special, I came here as a kid, it's where I started my football career so wearing this right now just feels so surreal.”
Away from the pitch, Rutherford has also attracted wider public attention through her relationship with broadcaster and social media personality GK Barry, helping introduce new audiences to the women's game. However, Millwall supporters will be hoping the headlines this season are created by her performances in a Lionesses shirt.
The signing is another significant statement of intent from Millwall Lionesses as preparations continue for the new season, with supporters eagerly anticipating Rutherford's second spell at the club where it all began.
Everyone at Maritime Radio sends their best wishes to Ella and her teammates for the season ahead.
