Cray Wanderers Make FA Cup History After Dramatic Penalty Shootout Win

Cray Wanderers, London's oldest football club, made history on Tuesday night in their FA Cup 4th qualifying round replay against Bedford Town before their largest home crowd of the season at Flamingo Park.

Cray had battled to a goalless draw at Bedford on Saturday, and were on the back foot for much of the opening spell, but things changed on 17 minutes when Ogunwamide cut in from the right wing to blast a curling shot past the visitor's keeper.

The Wands, as they are affectionately known, were good for their lead for the remainder of the first half until Bedford won a corner kick deep into stoppage time. As the ball reached the far post, a Bedford player fell and referee, from some distance away, awarded a penalty, resulting in an equaliser.

The second half was an even battle but with no further score, and extra time followed. Bedford took the lead (Evans on 101 minutes) then the Wands equalised (Yussuf penalty on 105), and the scores remained level to the end of extra time.

A penalty shoot out ensued, with Yussuf, Payne, Kader and Lowe converting for the hosts while home keeper JJ Briggs saved two Bedford kicks, and Cray Wanderers won 4-3, taking them through to the 1st Round Proper for the first time.

This will be a home match v League One front runners Stockport County on the weekend of November 7/8 - lots to look forward to at Flamingo Park on the Chislehurst boundary.
