Security alert closes town centre

Police descended upon Woolwich town centre on Monday, after a “suspicious item” was found in the basement of a house.

A resident clearing out a house in Market Street, Woolwich found the suspect item at around 10.55am on Monday, 28th October.

Specialist officers attended the scene and examined the item to determine whether it was dangerous.

As a precaution, a police cordon was placed around the surrounding.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “At 10:56 on Monday, 28 October, police were called to a house in Market Street, SE18, after a resident found an item they believed to be suspicious within the basement of a property they were clearing out.

“Specialist officers are in attendance and are currently examining the item.

“As a precaution a cordon is in place surrounding the area while investigations continue.”
