Rotherhithe Residents Face Uncertainty Over Local Police Hub Closure.

The soon to close Seven Islands Leisure Centre.

The closure of the local police hub at Seven Islands Leisure Centre has raised serious concerns about community safety in Rotherhithe, as residents and local officials work to find a solution.

The police hub, which has served the area for some time, closed at the end of March to make way for the new Canada Water Leisure Centre. The Metropolitan Police had been aware for some time that the hub would close, but the closure has left local residents worried about the future of neighbourhood policing in the area.

In an effort to address these concerns, local councillors have worked with British Land to secure an alternative location for the police hub. "We have had discussions with British Land about offering an alternative hub," they said via a local Facebook group. "They have agreed to make a space in Surrey Quays Shopping Centre available for the police to use until a permanent hub can be set up."

Despite this offer, the Metropolitan Police have not accepted the space at Surrey Quays. This decision has left the area at risk of permanently losing its police hub. According to the councillors, this move is a major blow to community safety in the area. "Community safety is a major concern, and we want to see more of a police presence in the area," they stated. "We are incredibly disappointed by the Met in this matter and will continue to liaise with them to find a solution."

The councillors also launched a petition to show the police the concerns of local residents. "We have launched a petition, which we will be presenting to the police so that they can see first-hand the views of residents," the councillors explained.

The situation has sparked alarm among Rotherhithe residents who fear that a lack of a police presence in the area could compromise their safety. With no clear resolution in sight, local councillors remain committed to pushing the Metropolitan Police to reconsider their position and ensure that the community has access to adequate policing services.
