The Sidcup Storyteller, a much-loved local landmark combining a library, café, cinema, and housing, has added yet another accolade to its growing list of honours — this time taking home a prestigious RIBA National Award 2025.
The award recognises the striking architectural work of DRDH Architects, whose innovative design has transformed Sidcup High Street since the building’s opening in 2021. As a RIBA National Award winner, the Sidcup Storyteller now goes on to be considered for the RIBA Stirling Prize 2025 — the UK’s most esteemed architectural award. The shortlist will be announced in September.
This latest win adds to an already impressive list of accolades, including:
-
Architect’s Journal Civic Building of the Year (2024)
-
LABC Best Public or Community Building (2024)
-
Pineapple Award for Community Building (2024)
-
Civic Trust Award (2025)
-
RIBA London Regional Winner (2025)
Councillor Cafer Munur, Cabinet Member for Place Shaping, said:
“This is amazing news for the borough. To be recognised by such a respected organisation among so many strong contenders is a testament to the design and attractiveness of this brilliant building.
“It represents real regeneration in one of our key town centres. We took an old Blockbuster store and turned it into something award-winning.
“As well as looking fantastic, the building houses a vibrant library, a popular café and high-quality housing. It’s a great example of the kind of positive growth we want to see across the borough.”
A Hub for the Community
The Sidcup Storyteller has quickly become a community favourite, offering a modern space for reading, events, learning, and socialising. The library regularly hosts children’s activities, book clubs and workshops, while the café provides a welcoming spot for residents and visitors alike.
Following recent management changes, the Council is currently working with potential new operators for the on-site cinema and hopes to announce further updates later this month.
