A large fire has broken out at an industrial unit on Tunnel Avenue in Greenwich, prompting a major response from the London Fire Brigade and the closure of key routes through south-east London.
Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 6:13pm this evening (Tuesday). Crews from East Greenwich, Greenwich, Deptford, Poplar and nearby stations attended the incident. Two 32-metre turntable ladders have been used as water towers to help tackle the blaze from above.
The fire was brought under control at around 9:04pm, but firefighters are expected to remain on site for some time to ensure the fire is completely extinguished.
As of 9:30pm, the fire was still producing a significant amount of smoke. Residents in the area have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.
There have been no reports of any injuries.
Due to the volume of smoke, a multi-agency decision was made to close several major routes. Both the Blackwall Tunnel and Silvertown Tunnel are closed in both directions until further notice, along with local closures on Tunnel Avenue and Blackwall Lane.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and expect extended journey times while emergency services remain at the scene.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, and an investigation will be carried out once it is safe to do so.
