Residents across the Royal Borough of Greenwich will come together next month to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in service to their country, as a series of Remembrance events takes place from Friday 7 November, to Tuesday 11 November.
The commemorations — supported by the Abbey Wood and Thamesmead, Blackheath and Charlton, and Eltham and Well Hall branches of the Royal British Legion — will include wreath-laying ceremonies, parades, remembrance services and the traditional two-minute silence.
Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the Armistice, the agreement that ended the fighting in the First World War, which began at 11am on 11 November 1918.
Councillor Linda Bird, Mayor of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, encouraged residents to take part:
“Remembrance is about coming together as a community to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who have served in the armed forces.
It’s also a moment to thank those who continue to serve and protect us today. Whether you attend a parade, a wreath laying, or simply pause for two minutes of silence, your presence and respect mean a great deal.”
Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, added:
“As we mark Remembrance, we not only honour those who gave their lives for our freedom, but also reaffirm our commitment to supporting our armed forces community and their families.
Their service, past and present, reflects the unity that defines our borough — a place that welcomes everyone.”
The Royal Borough of Greenwich is a proud signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, a national promise to ensure those who serve or have served, and their families, are treated with fairness and respect.
