BHM: This Sunday @ 12pm on Trevor Blackman Now

This week on Trevor Blackman Now, we’re talking health, history, poetry — and asking an important question: when does today’s news become tomorrow’s history?

Our resident psychiatrist and doctor, Dr Seshni, returns to discuss new international research showing cancer rates rising among people under 50. We explore what researchers are discovering, from diet and lifestyle to environmental factors, the warning signs we shouldn’t ignore, and what younger people can do to protect their health.

As Black History Month continues, so does our celebration of this year’s theme: Honouring Our Communities. The theme recognises that Black history isn’t simply about famous names or events from generations ago. It is also about the people shaping our communities and making history today. Poet Manatita, The Lantern Carrier, returns to the show with three powerful performances. He remembers the life and legacy of Benjamin Zephaniah, reimagines the haunting story behind Strange Fruit, and takes us to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, exploring the uncomfortable contradiction of a country extraordinarily rich in natural resources while so many of its people continue to experience poverty and exploitation.

We also head to New York City, where 28-year-old Oscar Belgal was shot and wounded by federal immigration agents in the Marble Hill neighbourhood while his five-year-old child was inside the vehicle. The shooting on 8 October sparked protests and renewed questions about ICE operations in the city. (Reuters)

Because history doesn’t begin 100 years after something happens.

History begins the moment something happens.

And if we are serious about Honouring Our Communities, we must remember the past, celebrate those making a difference today — and pay attention to the stories unfolding around Black and Brown communities right now.
