Each week, Ben Hopkinson looks back at a serious, crazy and happy news story from the past week.
We can’t not talk about Wednesday’s nail-biting match for England in the semi-final against Denmark. Trying to redeem himself after the infamous 1996 Euro semi-final penalty miss, Gareth Southgate led the England team to their first ever UEFA European Championships final. Going down 1-0 and then turning it around in extra time, the whole of the country seemingly erupted into singing Three Lions and a parody of Atomic Kitten’s Whole Again! Of course, the final is televised tonight, with kick-off at 8pm. Whatever you’re doing, enjoy! Come on England!
Black Mirror, which looks at a dystopian future with technology, looks like it may be having an episode replicated in real life. Be Right Back which stars Domhall Gleeson and Hayley Atwell follows the premise that Gleeson’s character passed away and returned to existence as a chatbot. Microsoft has recently been given a patent that allows the use to “make a chatbot using the personal information of deceased people”. In the patent description, “Microsoft will use “images, voice data, social media posts, electronic message, and more personal information” of the subject to create a realistic representation of their personality”. Quite alarming stuff here really.
Flying cars may arrive sooner than we think! Taking flight from Nitra and landing just over half-an-hour later Bratislava, the car with wings and propellers than transformed into a car again in only three minutes. The AirCar Prototype 1 was developed by Stefan Klein of KleinVision and has spent two decades trying to get a model working. The AirCar managed to get up to a cruising speed of 105mph at 8,200 feet and the fuel would allow this for 600 miles. I’d love to own one of these cars!
