Sinking Feeling in Charlton

A sinkhole has swallowed a car in Charlton on Thursday morning.

It is believed to have opened up in Woodland Terrace in the early hours.

Police put a cordon in place around the blue Vauxhall Zafira, which is understood to have been parked by its owner the previous evening.

The sinkhole  may have been caused by an underground cave.

A newspaper article published in the Kentish Mercury in 1849 has revealed that the sinkhole  may be connected to an underground chalk crevice nearby.

It is not the first sinkhole to open up in Greenwich this week.  Two are reported to have opened up in Plumstead, including the one below, which appeared on Sandy Hill Road.
