FA Cup holders defeat Premier League champions in traditionary season curtain raiser

The 2025 Community Shield ended in victory for the FA Cup winners, Crystal Palace, who defeated the reigning Premier League champions, Liverpool, 32 on penalties after a 22 draw at full time at Wembley Stadium. Liverpool took the lead after only four minutes, with the goal coming from new summer signing Hugo Ekitike, scoring on his debut. Crystal Palace equalised in the 17th minute with a penalty converted by Palace's top scorer from the last two seasons, Jean-Philippe Mateta. Liverpool then scored again rather poignantly at the 20:20 of the match (Diogo Jota's number 20 shirt), when another debutant for Liverpool, Jeremie Frimpong, also netted for Liverpool, which put Liverpool 21 up. However, Crystal Palace would equalise again through Ismaila Sarr to level the game at 22 in the 77th minute of the match. Crystal Palace ultimately won 43 on penalties in the shootout, won their second official trophy in only four months, and won the Community Shield for the very first time.
