2025 Community Shield Preview: Liverpool vs Crystal Palace
The 2025 Community Shield between reigning Premier League champions Liverpool and FA Cup winners Crystal Palace is set to take place on 10 August 2025 at Wembley Stadium.
Crystal Palace head into the match amid some controversy, having been demoted to the UEFA Conference League rather than qualifying for this season’s UEFA Europa League, despite their FA Cup triumph last season. This marks their first-ever campaign in continental European competition. Under manager Oliver Glasner, who previously guided Eintracht Frankfurt to Europa League glory in 2021/22, Palace are among the favourites to lift the Conference League trophy this season.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have enjoyed a busy transfer window following last season’s Premier League triumph. They have broken their club transfer record with the £116.5m signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. Wirtz’s former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong has also joined for £29.5m, while Milos Kerkez has been signed from Bournemouth for £40m, and France U21 international Hugo Ekitike arrives from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m.
With these high-profile signings, Liverpool are expected to be among the leading contenders for the Premier League title once again this season, alongside Arsenal and Manchester City.
While Liverpool will look to continue their domestic dominance, Crystal Palace will aim to make history both at Wembley and in Europe. With Glasner’s proven pedigree in continental tournaments, Palace could be genuine contenders to become Conference League winners in their debut European campaign.
