Confusion and Contradictions Surround Woolwich Road Closure

Motorists and cyclists were confused after conflicting information emerged about the emergency closure of Woolwich Road following unplanned works by Thames Water.

Greenwich Council issued a public statement earlier today confirming that Woolwich Road was closed in both directions due to emergency works, while stressing that the cycle lane remained open to cyclists. The council also acknowledged that Thames Water had failed to notify them in advance, prompting urgent discussions throughout the day to mitigate disruption, improve signage and revise diversion routes.

However, Maritime Radio has since confirmed that the situation on the ground does not fully align with the council’s public messaging.

This evening, Maritime Radio observed on-site diversion signage directing road users into the cycle lane, even though it is described as open and designated solely for cyclists. This directly contradicts the council’s assurance that the cycle lane remains operational for cycle traffic.

Further concern arose after Maritime Radio contacted the telephone number provided for the works. During that call, Maritime was informed that additional signage was still en route, indicating that the traffic management arrangements were incomplete when the council issued its statement.

This appears to conflict with Greenwich Council’s message that “additional warning signs are being installed” and that revised diversions are already being put in place following pressure applied to Thames Water throughout the day.

The council statement also advised motorists to follow diversion routes via Peartree Way, Bugsby’s Way and Anchor and Hope Way, while warning drivers not to use nearby residential streets. Bus routes 161, 177 and N1 were confirmed as diverted in both directions and not serving stops between Woolwich Road/Gallions Road and Rainton Road.

While the council has apologised for the disruption and stated it is raising serious concerns with Thames Water about the lack of notification and permission, conflicting information between official statements and on-site directions risks adding to confusion for drivers and cyclists alike.

Maritime Radio will continue to monitor the situation and share updates as clarity emerges over the traffic management arrangements and the expected reopening of Woolwich Road.
