MP warns of Greenwich’s elderly people in “real difficulty” over food stockpiling

Greenwich and Woolwich MP Matt Pennycook has called for better organisation by local supermarkets to allow elderly people to buy food in the face of widespread stockpiling due to Coronavirus covid-19.

Many supermarkets in the area last week instigated times of day when they are for use only by more vulnerable shoppers, but so far supermarket staff have been unable to enforce the new rules.

Writing on Twitter, Mr Pennycook stated that it is “abundantly clear that the dedicated shopping hour for the elderly is not working” and called for more supermarket security guards, or for support from the police to enforce the policy warning that “Someone has to get a grip of the situation or many elderly and vulnerable customers are going to find themselves in real difficulty.”
