We’re celebrating at Maritime Radio this week! Your new radio station for Greenwich borough has come a step closer to going on the air.
The Big Lottery Fund have approved a £10,000 grant for Maritime Radio, which will be used to purchase studio and transmission equipment and build a studio for the station to broadcast from.
Receiving this award from the Big Lottery Fund is a mark of the quality of the work Maritime Radio does in our community.
We believe local radio is important and when it is done properly, with the right funding, the right people and the right motives it can help change the lives of listeners and make a real and lasting impact to the area that it serves.
It can help local businesses prosper and thrive, making a real impact on the economy of the areas where it still exists and it can provide skills and training to local people.
In 2016 the government invited groups to apply to run community radio stations for areas within London. In the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Maritime Radio was awarded a community radio licence to broadcast to the area.
Planning is well under way and construction of the new studio facility will begin during August at our new permanent home at Shrewsbury House, in Shooters Hill.
Shrewsbury House is a community centre run for the benefit of the local people of Shooters Hill and Plumstead Common. It is a place where people of all ages can come together to enjoy fun, recreation and education.
Head of Engineering and Infrastructure, David Phillips, says: ‘Maritime Radio is there for the whole of the community to get involved with, whether it is on the microphone or working behind the scenes. The funding from the National Lottery will allow us to equip our studio with state-of-the-art resources that will ensure we broadcast for many years to come.’
John Mills, Chair, Shrewsbury House Community Association said: ‘Shrewsbury House Community Centre is delighted to be able to support Maritime Radio. Community Radio is the perfect medium for making contact with people who are socially isolated and it’s the ideal platform from which Shrewsbury House can reach out to a wider and more diverse audience. We look forward to working together.’
