Each week, Ben Hopkinson looks back at what’s happened the past 7 days and what was trending on Twitter with the Maritime Hashtag Minute.
This week’s #MaritimeHashtagMinute was is #ULEZ – a highly controversial topic as the zone was expanded on Tuesday across all 32 London Boroughs. If your non-compliant vehicle is on the road it will cost £12.50 per day, or alternatively you can apply to the Mayor of London’s Scrappage Scheme. View the Tweets below:
It’s here: in a move that will see 5 million more Londoners breathe cleaner air, the ULEZ has expanded to cover all of London today.

The ULEZ expansion came into effect today. This will hammer families, small businesses and charities in #Bexley #Bromley and elsewhere. Sadiq Khan’s next step is road user charging – we need to continue to work to make public his already developing plans. https://t.co/yWBMuHMQne

From tomorrow in Greater London, if your vehicle isn’t Ulez compliant, you’ll be causing pollution which harms children.

However, if you pay the £12.50 Ulez charge, you’re free to pollute the air children breathe as much as you like.
Don’t worry, Sadiq Khan told us that this…
Today is a great day! #ULEZ has expanded bringing cleaner air to 5m more Londoners. 9 in 10 cars seen driving in outer #London on an avg day are already compliant. For those 1 in 10 left ALL Londoners are now eligible for @MayorofLondon scrappage scheme. pic.twitter.com/3PdzPDb5aB

ULEZ expansion is now live, in defiance of Londoner protests and Starmer's pleas.
— Fraser Nelson (@FraserNelson) August 29, 2023
London's air has never been cleaner, and that was true before ULEZ. NO2 is falling fast everywhere, with or without city clean-air taxes.
The only independent study suggests ULEZ so far cut…
