Cleaning staff at Lewisham Hospital – part of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust – have walked out after not being paid.
The staff, who are employed by contractor ISS say that they have had weeks of disruption to their wages and that some workers have now not been paid at all.
The strike comes at the worst possible time for the hospital, which has been treating some cases of the highly-contagious Coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic. The workers’ union GMB said that it acknowledges the potential dangers of the strike but that its members were “at the end of their tether” and unable to pay rent or buy food.
ISS put the payment problems down to errors with a new pay system and said that the company is contacting affected workers and offering emergency payments if necessary.
