It was reported a police operation which was “ongoing and proactive” was taking place this morning – as witnesses reported hearing “gunshots” and “explosions”.
Residents from Abbey Wood, SE2, were awoken by many blasts around 3am.
Photos and footage which was posted on social media showed bright flashes, at least one helicopter circling near the Woolwich Ferry terminal and another apparently showed dozens of police vehicles and officers at a car park in the area.
A spokesman for Met Police confirmed an “ongoing” operation was taking place and a “number of arrests” had been made.
Greenwich MPS tweeted: “There is currently an ongoing, proactive police operation at a side in Abbey Wood, SE2 and a number of arrest had men made.
Greenwich MPS have ruled out terrorism.
