Greenwich’s primary schools will now not open on Monday following a u-turn by the government, but will remain closed for at least a fortnight.
On Wednesday a list was released of areas in London and the South East where primary schools should remain closed due to rising covid-19 rates, but Greenwich, along with several other boroughs seeing high rates of infection, was not among them.
After campaigning by the Mayor of London and borough authorities for the remaining London schools to be added to the closures, Education Secretary Gavin Williamson reversed his decision on Friday and announced that all London boroughs would now have the same rule, that primary schools should remain closed until at least 18th January.
Dan Thorpe, leader of Greenwich Council said he was “absolutely delighted” with the decision.
Thorpe previously clashed with government education authorities before Christmas when his instruction to schools in Greenwich to close a week early led to the council being threatened with legal action by the government.
