The body which runs Greenwich Park has opened a consultation on whether cars should be banned. Although the road through the park is closed during the day, the gates currently open to cars at four o’clock in the afternoon on weekdays, leading to rush-hour traffic using the park as a through-route.
The Royal Parks Movement Strategy consultation makes clear that through traffic is not encouraged, stating that:
“Park roads are primarily for the use of park visitors coming to the parks, not for commuters travelling through the parks. Over time, we will discourage the through-movement of motor vehicles within our parks.”
However, concern has been expressed by local residents that the closure of the park to traffic could lead to nearby roads becoming busier.
