Nearly two-and-a-half thousand people in Greenwich have stopped paying their council tax since the pandemic lockdown began, a councillor has announced.
Chris Kirby, who will become Greenwich’s cabinet member for finance this week, tweeted on Thursday that with reductions in revenue in many areas including planning fees and business rates as well as lower council tax payments, the council will need to tens of millions of pounds to continue services, including those under pressure from the virus.
Mr Kirby criticised the Westminster for its lack of support saying “We can’t have a situation where the government throws councils under the bus and runs away from funding commitments.”
