Flat fire in Thamesmead last night

A total of Six fire engines with around 40 firefighters were called to a 3rd floor flat fire on Yarnton Way in Thamesmead last night.  Part of the flat was damaged by the fire.

The fire was believed to have started on the balcony and spread to the living room of the property. A woman managed to leave the affected flat before the Fire Brigade arrived.

Approximately 75 residents self evacuated the block while a number of other occupants stayed inside their unaffected flats.

The Brigade was called at 22:02 and the fire was under control by 23:14.  Fire crews from Plumstead, Erith, East Greenwich and New Cross fire stations were at the scene.  The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
