Thirteen-year old Conor has the same nightmare every night. The same one that started when his mother got ill, and the treatments don’t seem to be working.

But this night, things have changed. An elemental force of nature, a monster a mythical folklore, fantastical entity arrives at his window and forces him to face the scariest thing any human can. The truth.

A Monster Calls is a gripping, vital story based on the novel written by Patrick Ness which was based on an idea by Siobhan Dowd who sadly wasn’t able to develop this herself before succumbing to illness. The play opened in 2018 at The Old Vic and went on to earn itself an Olivier award. Praised for its ensemble work the play had a successful run there before going on tour in 2020.

It’s a hauntingly beautiful story about facing fear and overcoming grief. It balances perfectly the realism of Conor’s world and the magical nature of the Monster’s. All of this comes together to allow audiences to connect to the empathetic and emotional tale spun within.
