Dead Belmarsh inmate’s sister questions cause of death

A remand prisoner has been found dead at Belmarsh Prison. Liridon Saliuka, who was awaiting trial for murder, was found unresponsive in his cell on 2 January.

Prison authorities are treating his death as self-inflicted, however Mr Saliuka’s family believe it was connected to a disagreement with staff over whether Mr Saliuka should be classed as disabled, following an earlier car accident.

His sister Dita tweeted that there were rumours that Mr Saliuka had died after “an altercation with prison guards”.

The prisons ombudsman is investigating.
