Woolwich Carnival returned this weekend, bringing the streets alive with costumes, dancing, music, community stalls in a day of all out carnival fun.
The carnival was organised by the Woolwich Carnival Association, a voluntary committee of local residents, community groups, art organisations and schools that have joined together to create a day of celebration and festivities for the local community.
At this year’s Carnival, the theme was ‘Full of Flavours’ – celebrating the diversity of the borough.
Local community groups and schools have been getting creative over the last months, supported by local arts organisations, getting ready to form the Woolwich Carnival parade. The parade travelled through Woolwich; spreading dance, colour and carnival sounds through the town centre, ending in General Gordon Square.
The main stage hosted a range of professional and local acts throughout the day, including a dedicated slot of Carnival Young Musicians and support the next generation of talent.
Alongside the music there were local stall holders providing a range of tasty food and local crafts.
Teacher at Plumcroft School and Carnival committee member, Sophie Nicol said: “This is the third year that Plumcroft school has been involved with Woolwich Carnival. Our children and families have a wonderful time at this event. It is so exciting, inclusive and really celebrates our community. This year is going to be the best Woolwich Carnival yet!!”
Carnival sponsors this year included, Arts Council, Royal Borough of Greenwich, GAVs, Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre, Berkeley Homes, Meyer Homes, Lovell Homes. The Carnival is also sponsored by the Cultural Destinations team; presented in partnership with Visit Greenwich, Royal Borough of Greenwich, Royal Greenwich Heritage Trust and Greenwich + Docklands International Festival with financial support from Arts Council England.
