World Book Day

The most loved children's books of all time have been revealed.

The Famous Five series is the nation's most loved children's books of all time. First published in 1942, the 21 books follow four adventurous young children, Julian, Dick, Anne and Georgina, and her dog, Timmy. The books have topped a poll of most loved childhood novels, beating the likes of Harry Potter and the Philosopher‘s Stone, which appeared in 17th place.

A study of parents of children found 82% read to their little ones on a regular basis, with one in 5 doing so at least once a day. And many of us employ a host of storytelling techniques to capture the imagination of their little ones. These include using sound effects, dimming the lights, and even embellishing or tweaking the story.

If your kids are dressing up as their favourite characters for World Book Day, a new poll says the average costume is now £19, but more than one in ten parents admit they‘re spending over £50 on a single outfit, with many parents saying they feel this pressure to out‑do each other
