Weekly News Rundown Stories – Sunday 5th October 2025

Each week, Ben Hopkinson looks back at a serious, crazy, and happy news story from the past week.

Serious News
Bosses for TfL have announced an offer to the transport trade unions to try and halt another strike across the network.

The deal lasts for three years and consists of a 3.4% pay rise in the first year with further increases depending on the RPI throughout the second and third years.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey says that the new offer “will now be discussed by the national executive committee and in consultation with the membership”.

This follows the last strike which took place earlier in September, which caused major disruption across the entire network throughout the capital.

Crazy News
A PC gamer from Shanghai has entered an exclusive club of becoming the first ever person to own more than 40,000 distinct paid games on the Steam platform.

SonixLegend has spent anywhere from $248,000 (the lowest prices tracked) to $642,000 (the current prices of the games).

This value might even be greater when the non-distinct games with the lower player counts, or free games are included also.

The game that SonixLegend has played the most is a free game from 2010 in Alien Swarm – they have amassed 551 hours in the software that doesn’t even count within the 40,000.

I wonder how big their backlog to finish, or even start is!

Happy News
Stations and depots throughout the TfL network have been given colour and life in a yearly contest.

Since 1910, the In Bloom competition sees staff decorate the facilities with flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables.

The big winners of this year include Highbury & Islington for Best Theme, while South Tottenham won two – Best Cultivated Garden and the top prize in the Dennis Sanger Best in Show Award for being a “riot of colour”.

Seb Dance, Deputy Mayor for Transport, says: “TfL's 'In Bloom' gardening competition brightens up green spaces at stations and transport hubs across our network, brightening up people's journeys. The Mayor and I would like to congratulate all the winners of this year's competition as we continue building a better, greener London for everyone”.
