Blackwall Tunnel closed due to incident

The Blackwall Tunnel was closed on Thursday afternoon causing huge disruption to travel throughout the area, as motorists experienced queues through Greenwich, Charlton and Woolwich.

The Met police reported the tunnel closing at around 12.45, with reports of concerns for the welfare of a man near to the tunnel.

Traffic was stopped from entering the A102 northbound at Greenwich, with drivers reporting being turned away from police, with an extra 45 minutes being added to their journey.  The closure left eerie scenes on a road that is usually very busy.

By mid-afternoon, long delays were being felt throughout the area, with motorists diverting to the Woolwich Ferry.  The one-boat service was struggling to meet demand, with long delays at the ferry roundabout and onto the A205, south circular.
