Beckenham Place Park has been closed until the weekend following concerns about life-guarding around the new swimming lake.
According to Lewisham Council, the number of visitors to the park has exceeded expectations as temperatures have soared.
A Council spokesman has said that “the public response to the redevelopment of Beckenham Place Park has been fantastic.”
“However, as with any open water facility we need to ensure that the lake and the space around it is managed carefully to ensure people can enjoy themselves safely.”
Temporary fencing is to be installed around the lake, and a there will be a small, ticketed charge to enter the lake area. Lifeguards will be on duty throughout the lake’s opening hours once it’s up and running again.
The closure comes a day after three swimmers were feared dead after going missing while swimming in different parts of the Thames.
