Where is Severndroog Castle?
Severndroog Castle is an elegantly preserved Gothic tower situated on Shooter’s Hill, one of the highest points in London. From their viewing platform, you will be captivated by the spectacular 360° view of the capital and beyond.
This historic Grade II listed 18th century building is nestled in ancient woodland, making it the ideal hidden gem to explore away from the London bustle
Severndroog Castle was built in 1784 as a memorial to Sir William James, once the Director of the East India Company, by his wife Lady Anne James. It celebrates his most famous exploit, the capturing of the island fortress of Suvarnadurg. Severndroog Castle is 132 metres (432 feet) above sea level, gifting it with exceptional views of the London cityscape, the Thames River and the edges of London’s seven surrounding counties.

THU 18 JULY Changeling Theatre ‘Nell Gwynn’
Enjoy the Castle and its outdoors after hours with Kent-based Changeling Theatre’s brilliantly funny production of ‘Nell Gwynn’ this July. We invite you to join us at the historic Severndroog Castle, the only place in the city you can enjoy a glass of wine surrounded by ancient woodland and watch a riveting play all at once. Sit back, relax as the sun slowly sets and watch this seriously fun suspenseful, intriguing and hilarious outdoor production of ‘Nell Gwynn’ by Jessica Swale. Severndroog’s partner The Terrace Tearoom’s celebrated chef, Christopher Hackett, will be cooking up delicious food and providing wine and beer all evening, which will be available for purchase on the evening. The Play: Nell Gwynn by Jessica Swale – the smash hit musical comedy from the Globe “They’ve disgraced our trade. Ruined our art. They put a woman on the stage!” London, 1660, King Charles II has exploded onto the scene with the love of all things loud, extravagant and sexy. And at Drury Lane a young Nell Gwynn is causing stirrings amongst the theatregoers. Nell Gwynn charts the rise of an unlikely heroine, from her roots in Coal Yard Alley, to her success as Britain’s most celebrated actress, and her hard won place in the heart of the King. But at a time when women are second-class citizens, can her charm and spirit protect her from the dangers of the court? The British playwright Jessica Swale’s Nell Gwynn premiered at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2015 and was nominated for five awards, winning a 2016 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. Changeling’s creative director Rob Forknall says: “Every year we ask our audience to vote for their choice of plays the following year. We have a real connection with our audiences, and the vote is an important part of what we do. This year the people of Kent have spoken and voted for Nell Gwynn in last years audience poll, it’s the first time we have performed a play in the open air by a living, FEMALE playwright. We are very excited. I saw this show at the Globe and thought it perfect for our audiences, sexy and funny.” This year’s Changeling Theatre outdoor tour is making the most of its talented cast, including new and returning faces. Former 2010 Rookie, Scott Ellis plays Leontes/Charles II and Jess Nesling, who was our green goddess, Elvira in last years Blithe Spirit, will be playing Hermione. One of our new faces, Beth Mullen, was recently part of Ricky Gervais’ 2018 hit comedy After Life, playing Hitler Mum. This year we have two fantastic Kent based apprentices, Layomi Coker from Gravesend and Tegan Steward from the Isle of Grain – this year the Apprentice Scheme is being supported by ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND. As part of a summer-long tour, the company is performing Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and Swale’s Nell Gwynn in a range of outdoor locations from 28 June to 18 August 2019, in venues as diverse as Margate seafront and Biddenden Vineyard to a wide range of public gardens, parks, amphitheatres and many of the county’s best-loved castles – including Severndroog Castle. CLICK TO BOOK YOUR TICKET EVENT INFORMATION:Doors Open 7.30pm Tickets £25 Minimum age 14 Ticket does not include food or drinks; available for purchase on site. Free parking facilities available at The Castle Wood Car Park; it will remain open for the duration of this event.
